Hi, Subscriber First Name! Thanks for Subscribing β₯
|
Thank you for having me in your inbox. Weβre on issue 14 now β wow! Thanks for sticking with me. Or if youβre new, welcome!
Do you know how many newsletters there are in the world?
I donβt either! I tried to research it, and I found out the most subscribed-to is The New York Times. Their morning newsletter has 17 million subscribers! Wonder if it has Wordle in it? Of course, lots out there are sponsored, some contain affiliate links, some are even paid for.
Since I started this newsletter fun things have happened to my little Lyons Creative world. Iβve been asked to appear on podcasts, present webinarsβ¦ has it made me rich? No (not YET, ahemβ¦) but you never know whoβs looking or who your newsletter will get passed on to.
Plus, I love doing this and sharing my font finds, and yours. Speaking of which, throughout this edition Iβll share the finds from people whoβve replied to me. So, keep βem coming!
Speaking of speakingβ¦ clients ask for βpull quotesβ to highlight testimonials and particularly juicy bits of interviews. I know it might sound random (Iβm not a saddo, I promise) but I have a favourite font for creating speech marks. Itβs Abril Display Black.
|
There are many weights to this font. I choose Display Black because itβs chunky and has the elegant curves that cut in abruptly β love it!
|
It was designed by JosΓ© Scaglione & Veronika Burian and released in 2011. Looks older though, doesnβt it? A classic. Typewolf say: Abril is a Modern serif typeface. Although the display weights may fall into the Modern category, the text weights were more inspired by nineteenth century slab serifs and Scotch Romans. See? Classic. The quote marks look especially great with colour. What do you think? You can download from various libraries or if you have Adobe Creative Cloud you can try it here.

Sale of the Century (Gothic?) Well, no Century Gothic in sight at the I Love Typography sale. There are over 10,000 fonts at 50% off though, check it out! The half-price sale finishes today (if youβre reading this on Friday). One that caught my eye was this Rig Shaded by Jamie Clarke. I really love the style. It reminds me of street lettering artist Rachel Joy Price. Imagine having it in your own design bank, to play around with.
|
Talking about Jamie Clarkeβ¦ Lettering artist and type designer Jamie wrote a blog post on Fonts for Cookbooks. We all know we judge cookbooks by their covers. The artwork and the fonts inspire us to pick it up from the shelf and possible cook something. Well, not meβ¦ I buy them for the designsβ¦ one day Iβll surprise the family with dinner or be a guest on Come Dine With Me. Do check the bakers dozen heβs picked β absolutely delicious!

Suggested by FLF peeps The following fonts and finds have been suggested by Font Love Friday readers: This san serif Figtree font suggested by Andi is friendly and FREE! I love the descriptions on this page. And Jill has been searching through these lovely Flower Fonts

Swap Lorem Ipsum for a Jeff or cake. Replace your boring Lorem Ipsum placeholder text with fun stuff. Someone out there created Jeffsum. The text generator is based on sayings from the actor Jeff Goldblum. Itβs hilarious (well if you like that kinda comedy)! Thanks to Amy for sharing this.random text generator with us. And thereβs also a Cake Ipsum generator. But donβt forget to replace the words. You donβt want this cakey goodness going to pressβ¦ or do you?

House of Cards In a world full of tech and e-greeting cards, time for a step away from the screen. This is a beautiful book about the greeting card industry, which highlights a few card makers. House of Cards was created by Sarah Hamilton and is full of tips and beautifully designed cards with a range of typography. Itβll make you want to either go and buy more cards from independents, or try making some yourself. Thanks, Nicola, for suggesting.

Starting out in the world of freelance I love to help people, especially students who are starting out and want to go freelance. I was recently asked on a call, βhow do I get started as a freelancer?β. Everyoneβs journey is different, but I gave her a few resources including the website Creative Boom. Thereβs a great post from them which lists practical and affordable tools to keep the costs down when you first go into freelancing. Every penny counts!
|
On the Lyons Creative bookshelf As freelancers, we wear many hats. One of them is shiny and marketing shaped. I only started marketing on social media about two years ago. Up to then I got most of my work via referrals or repeat work. But recently since creating content and doing my own marketing, my website and content has brought in new clients. I read, digest, and dip in and out of this book - Content DNA by LinkedIn trainer John Esperian, whose tagline is βRelentlessly Helpfulββ¦ and he is. So much so, heβs actually registered Relentlessly Helpful as his ownβ¦but Iβm sure heβll forgive me for using the words!

Coworking cheerleaders Come join me and other freelancers as we get our work done during the FREE Freelancer Magazine Online Coworking session. Well, as long as there are no distractions, deliveries, cats jumping on your desk, Hello Fresh salespeople or doom scrolling social media *ahem*. We work for two hours which is split into two lots of 45 mins of focused work, with breakout rooms in the middle. The breaks remind me of the good olβ days of the water cooler moments. You get to have a chat with fellow freelancers and itβs a great way to tackle those annoying little jobs you keep putting off.
During October Iβm hosting on the 3rd, 11th and 26th. Times are 9.30 -11.30 am GMT, come join us!

Well, what a September! Iβve been busy getting back into the swing of things after the Summer. I went to a few events where I caught up with friends and met new people. I attended the launch of issue 5 of Tonic magazine, Digital Women Live, SMMMeetUP which is networking for social media and marketing peeps.
People say βI see you were out again Angeβ but it is workβ¦well, kind of! I love chatting to people. I also had the pleasure of talking to email marketing expert Minal Patel about fonts on a LinkedIn Live. You can have a listen here as she repurposed it into a YouTube vid. We all know we should repurpose and reuse our content, Minal actually does it. In the talk, I mentioned font licensing and to always double check what your fonts can and canβt be used for. I spotted this on hols in Turkey. Iβm pretty sure Netflix wouldnβt be too happy!
|
On that note, cheers and HAPPY FRIDAY!
Do pop me a message, especially if you see some cool fonts out in the wild.
Have a great Friday and month ahead.
